Moments in Search
My painting moves between what is recognisable and what remains indeterminate, shifting between representation and its dissolution. I always begin with something concrete: a landscape, a plant, a figure, something that speaks to me. In the course of painting, I move away from the subject, for I do not wish to depict it but to explore the interplay of colour, plane and line.
The representational and the non-representational should touch without either displacing the other. In doing so, I strive for simplification, reduction and clarity. My way of working is gestural and intuitive, and I want this movement to remain visible in the finished painting: in the brushstroke, in the application of paint, in the treatment of the surface. Anyone standing before my paintings should be able to retrace the process of painting and follow the traces of my perception. Attention shifts from the subject itself to the presence of the colour, the trace of the line, the texture of the canvas. Nothing is fully spelled out, which leaves the viewer room for their own associations. I regard my works as captured moments of a search, not as outcomes. Each painting is a fresh approach to the question of how much reduction is possible in order to convey, or indeed heighten, the impact of what has been seen. It is precisely this that challenges me anew, again and again.
The paintings shown in this exhibition are part of the series L’important, c’est la rose. Here, flowers, mostly roses, were the starting point for my exploration of the pictorial possibilities described above. The paintings were created between May and July 2026.
